Blackheads are not serious acne. Doctors usually recommend an over the counter medicine for people with mild signs of acne. You can apply the medicine directly to the affected skin.

There are many acne lotions, creams, and solutions on the shelves. The major ones that specifically deal with blackheads are:

  • Resorcinol – can help break down blackheads and whiteheads
  • Salicylic acid – helps break down blackheads and whiteheads.
  • Sulfur – helps break down blackheads and whiteheads.

So look for these when you purchase at CVS or other drugstores.

If you have severe acne problems, seek the help of dermatologists. These doctors specialize in skin problems and they treat all kinds of acne, particularly severe cases. However, if your case is mild, talk to your family doctor, or pediatricians.

The acne treatment plan is usually to heal existing lesions and stop new ones from developing. Medicine can be prescribed to reduce problems such as inflammation, bacteria growth, and oil production.

Over the counter lotions, creams, and medicine can be used too. The treatment usually involve medicine taken by mouth and medicine applied to your skin.

You probably often wonder whether everyone gets acne. The truth is, people of all races and ages get acne. Acne is the most common in teenagers and young adults. 80% of all people get acne outbreaks between the age of 11 and 30. But some people get it even in their 40s and 50s. Most acne tends to go away when people reach their 30s.

There are also many myths about acne causes such as greasy foods. But the truth is, there’s hardly any evidence that shows greasy foods causing acne.  Stress and dirt are also commonly cited as acne causes. They can make it worse, but not causing you to have acne.
